This summer in Vancouver, the city is bursting with outdoor dance events, and incredible workshops, for kids, teens, and up! Last night, Bree and I took our little families to the Kitsilano Showboat to watch the kids from Peggy Peats School of Dance perform a free two hour show of excellently choreographed tap, hip hop, jazz, and contemporary performances.
The students ranged in age from 6 years to high school seniors, and they were seriously committed performers. The technical execution these boys and girls showed us was amazing, and had the audience on their feet.
For those of you that are looking for some fun, and professional, dance workshops around the city, here are a few for a variety of ages and skill-range:
This summer intensive is more for the older set, who have some dance training under their belts. Modus Operandi offers a long-term training program for dancers, and their summer intensive has been operating for a numbers of years to great success. Many graduates of their program go on to have successful careers as part of companies, or as independent dancers.
The Happening is having a Summer workshop/camp from August 18-22. For all young ages, The Happening’s enthusiastic and talented Kimberly Stevenson will engage the kids in almost every modern dance form, jazz, combo, hip hop, ballet, and contemporary! Check back here for more details!
If you’re in the market to see some dance, rather than perform it, there are a couple of incredible festivals and series coming up fast:
All Over the Map is a free outdoor dance series, put on by New Works, held on Granville Island this July. Performances will be held at Ron Basford Park on July 6th, 13th, and 20th, with two shows per day at 1pm & 3pm.

Dancing on the Edge is a world-renowned Dance Festival happening from July 3 – 12, featuring the best of contemporary Vancouver dance companies and dancers. This festival has been running for over two decades, and is getting bigger each year. Click here for more details and to purchase tickets.
It is truly amazing what people are able to convey with just their bodies. The dedication required to learn a new piece, and to keep a dancer’s body in peak condition is mind-blowing. My own kids are mesmerized by dance, and we have been so lucky to be able to see cutting-edge dance right here in the city. We’ll certainly be taking advantage of some of these workshops, and performances. Say ‘hi’ if you see us!
